Laparoscopic surgery
Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery or keyhole surgery, is a surgical technique in which operations in the abdomen or pelvis are performed through small incisions (typically 0.5 to 1.5 cm) using a camera and specialized instruments.
What is Laproscopic Surgery
This method offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, such as smaller incisions, less pain, quicker recovery, and reduced scarring.Instead of making one large incision, the surgeon makes several small cuts. A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted through one of the incisions, allowing the surgeon to view the internal organs on a monitor in real time.
The laparoscope is a long, thin, flexible instrument with a high-resolution camera and light attached to the end. The camera sends images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis to a video monitor, providing the surgeon with a clear view to perform the surgery.
Specialized Instruments
A woman's body must release an egg from one of her ovaries (ovulation). The egg must go through a fallopian tube toward the uterus (womb).A man's sperm must join with (fertilize) the egg along the way.The fertilized egg must attach to the inside of the uterus (implantation). Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas is often used to inflate the abdomen, creating space between the organs for better visibility and easier manipulation of tissues during surgery.
Common Uses of Laparoscopic Surgery:
Laparoscopy is commonly used for diagnostic purposes or for treating conditions related to the abdomen, pelvis, and reproductive organs.
Gynecological Surgeries:
Treatment for endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, or removal of the fallopian tubes or ovaries.
Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) can also be performed laparoscopically.
Gallbladder Surgery (Cholecystectomy):
One of the most common laparoscopic surgeries, is often used to remove a diseased or inflamed gallbladder.
Hernia Repair:
Laparoscopic techniques can be used to repair abdominal and groin hernias.
Bariatric Surgery:
Weight-loss surgeries, such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy, can be performed laparoscopically.
